Extract text from a PDF without uploading it
Text extraction reads the text layer already inside the PDF and hands it back as plain text. It works instantly on generated documents and finds nothing at all in a scan, which contains pictures of words rather than words.

In detail
Extraction is how you quote a clause, search a statement, or get a report into your notes without retyping it. The text is the entire sensitive payload of the document, which makes a hosted extractor an odd choice: you would be transmitting the exact content you wanted to work with privately in order to read it more conveniently.
A scan yields nothing, and that surprises people every time. A scanned page holds an image, and an image of the word invoice is not the word invoice. If extraction returns an empty result or a few stray labels, the file is a scan and no amount of retrying changes that. Convert the pages to images and read them, or obtain a version of the document that was generated rather than photographed.
Layout is the other limit. Reading order comes from the internal structure of the file, so a two column page can extract as interleaved lines and a table can arrive as a run of values without its grid. Headers and footers repeat on every page. Extract first, then read what you got before pasting it into anything that matters.
Two things are worth verifying here. That the extraction ran locally, which the network panel or a disconnected network will show you, and that extraction is not a privacy measure: the extracted text still contains every name in the document, and the original PDF still carries its metadata untouched.
Things that catch people out
- Extraction is not redaction. Text you thought was hidden behind a rectangle comes out with everything else, which is a useful way to discover a bad redaction.
- Multi-column layouts extract in the file's internal order, which is not always the human reading order.
- A page that displays text but yields nothing is either a scan or a document whose text was drawn as vector outlines.
Try it: Hash Generator
The file hasher is on every page here because it takes any file at all and proves the point: disconnect from the network, drop a file in, and it still returns a checksum you can compare against a published one.

MD5 is cryptographically broken and should not be used for security purposes. Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 instead.
