Morse code is a method of encoding text characters into sequences of dots (.) and dashes (-), also called dits and dahs. Developed by Samuel Morse in the 1830s, it was originally used for telegraph communication. Each letter, number, and some punctuation marks have a unique Morse code pattern.

The converter supports all 26 English letters (A-Z), digits (0-9), and common punctuation marks (period, comma, question mark, exclamation, slash, parentheses, ampersand, colon, semicolon, equals, plus, minus, quotation marks, and at sign).

In Morse code, individual dots and dashes within a letter are separated by a short gap. Letters within a word are separated by a medium gap (typically 3 dot-lengths). Words are separated by a longer gap (typically 7 dot-lengths). In written form, letters are separated by spaces and words by slashes (/).

SOS is three dots, three dashes, three dots (... --- ...), sent as one continuous signal with no letter gaps. It was chosen as the international distress call because the pattern is simple and unmistakable. Type SOS in the text input and play the audio to hear it.

Switch the direction to Morse to Text and paste the dots and dashes, using spaces between letters and a slash or larger space between words. The tool maps each pattern back to its character. If decoding fails, check that letters are space-separated rather than run together.
