In detail
The quad in quad HD is often misread as four times Full HD, which would be 4K. It means four times the 1280 by 720 HD frame: double the width, double the height, four times the pixels. Against 1080p the increase is more modest, a factor of about 1.78, which is the same number as the 16:9 ratio purely by coincidence.
That middle position is what makes it a popular desktop panel. It gives noticeably more working area than Full HD without demanding the graphics throughput of a 4K panel, and at the physical sizes common on a desk it lands at a pixel density where an unscaled interface is still comfortable to read.
Because it is exactly 16:9, it interchanges cleanly with every other size in that family. A 1920 by 1080 image scales to 2560 by 1440 with no crop, and a 3840 by 2160 master downscales to it, so a single 16:9 asset library serves all three without a single ratio decision.
The image resizer has a QHD 2560 by 1440 preset alongside its Full HD and 4K UHD ones, so producing all three sizes from one source is three clicks rather than three sets of typed dimensions. Because all three are the same ratio, the exports differ only in resolution and can be swapped for one another in a layout with no change to the surrounding CSS.
Examples
1280 * 2 = 2560
720 * 2 = 1440
(2560 * 1440) / (1280 * 720) = 4 // four times 720p
(2560 * 1440) / (1920 * 1080) = 1.7778 // against 1080p1280 x 720 -> 0.92 MP
1920 x 1080 -> 2.07 MP
2560 x 1440 -> 3.69 MP
3840 x 2160 -> 8.29 MP
// identical ratio at every stepThings that catch people out
- QHD is not 4K. The names are close and the pixel counts differ by a factor of 2.25.
- 2K is used loosely and inconsistently in marketing, sometimes for this resolution and sometimes for something near 2048 wide. Quote the pixel dimensions instead.
- An interface that assumes a 1080p viewport leaves large empty margins here, which reads as an unfinished layout rather than a spacious one.
