Ultrawide screen size: 3440 by 1440
3440 by 1440 is the common ultrawide desktop resolution. It reduces to 43:18, which is 2.39:1, not the 21:9 it is usually marketed as.

In detail
The advertised ratio is wrong and the real one is more interesting. Dividing 3440 and 1440 by their greatest common divisor of 80 gives 43:18, which is 2.3889. The 21:9 on the box would be 2.3333. Nothing sold as 21:9 is actually 21:9, and this panel is closer to the 2.39:1 anamorphic cinema ratio than to its own marketing.
The height is the giveaway about where the panel came from. 1440 is exactly the height of a QHD display, and the width is simply extended from 2560 to 3440. The panel is a QHD screen with 880 more pixels of width, which is why a QHD wallpaper fits vertically and leaves 440 pixels of gap on each side.
That proximity to 2.39:1 has a pleasant consequence: cinema content shot at the anamorphic ratio very nearly fills the panel, with only a hair of letterboxing. It is the reason ultrawide panels are marketed at film enthusiasts, and it is a genuine benefit rather than a manufactured one.
For layout, the width is the problem rather than the gift. A line of body text stretched to 3440 pixels is unreadable, so an ultrawide layout has to constrain its measure and use the extra width for parallel columns or panels rather than for wider paragraphs.
Examples
gcd(3440, 1440) = 80
3440 / 80 = 43
1440 / 80 = 18
3440 / 1440 = 2.3889 // advertised as 21:9, which is 2.3333QHD: 2560 x 1440
ultrawide: 3440 x 1440
extra width: 880 pixels, 440 on each side of a centred QHD imageThings that catch people out
- 21:9 is a marketing label, not the panel's ratio. Working from 21:9 leaves a visible gap or crop on a real 3440 by 1440 screen.
- A wallpaper cropped from a 16:9 source loses most of its height. Start from an ultrawide original or accept a heavy crop.
- Full width text on this panel is unreadable. Constrain the measure and spend the width on columns.
