In detail
This is the frame that takes the most vertical space in a feed, and on a mobile first platform vertical space is attention. The greatest common divisor of 1080 and 1350 is 270, giving a clean 4:5, which makes it easy to lay out and easy to reason about: five units tall for every four wide.
It is not a full screen frame. A Story at 9:16 fills the display; a 4:5 post leaves room above and below for the account row and the caption, which is the point. The feed is a scroll of cards rather than a sequence of screens, and a card that filled the screen would remove the context that makes the feed readable.
The profile grid crops it to a square from the centre, taking 135 pixels off the top and 135 off the bottom. That is the single most important thing to know about this frame: the extra height you gain in the feed is exactly the height you lose in the grid, so a headline placed in the top strip is invisible to anyone browsing your profile.
There is no 4:5 preset in the cropper, which offers 1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 3:2, 2:3 and 9:16 plus a custom width and height. Entering 4 and 5 as a custom ratio, or 1080 and 1350 as explicit dimensions, gets you there.
Examples
gcd(1080, 1350) = 270
1080 / 270 = 4
1350 / 270 = 5
// aspect-ratio: 4 / 5;.portrait-post {
aspect-ratio: 4 / 5;
position: relative;
}
.grid-safe {
position: absolute;
inset: 10% 0; /* the square the profile grid keeps */
outline: 1px dashed #0f0;
}Things that catch people out
- The profile grid takes a centre square. Anything in the top or bottom tenth of the frame is missing from the grid view.
- 4:5 is not 3:4 and not 2:3. All three are portrait and they crop differently, so a template built for one leaves gaps in another.
- Feed frame limits are platform guidance and have changed more than once. Build the ratio into a template rather than hard coding the pixels everywhere.
