Pinterest pin size: 1000 by 1500
1000 by 1500 is the standard pin. It simplifies to 2:3 and comes to 1.5 megapixels, the tallest of the common social canvases relative to its width.

- Portrait pins in a masonry style feed
In detail
The feed is a masonry column layout, so every pin gets the same width and takes whatever height its ratio demands. That changes the economics of shape completely: a taller pin occupies more of the column and therefore more of the viewer's attention, which is why the recommended ratio here is portrait while most other feeds settle near square.
Two to three is the balance point. The greatest common divisor of 1000 and 1500 is 500, so the fraction reduces cleanly, and the resulting shape is tall enough to command the column without being so tall that the platform truncates it. Pins substantially taller than this shape can be cut off in the feed, with the full image only visible after a click.
It is also a shape with a long history outside the web. Two to three is the classic 35mm still photography frame in portrait orientation, so a portrait photograph straight out of a camera is very often already exactly this ratio and needs no crop at all.
The cropper has a 2:3 ratio preset, which is the direct route from an arbitrary source. The resizer takes typed dimensions to land on 1000 by 1500 exactly, and the calculator will tell you what any other width implies for the height at this ratio.
Examples
gcd(1000, 1500) = 500
1000 / 500 = 2
1500 / 500 = 3
1000 / 1500 = 0.6667 // 1:1.5 in portrait.feed {
columns: 4;
column-gap: 16px;
}
.pin {
break-inside: avoid;
margin-bottom: 16px;
}
.pin img {
aspect-ratio: 2 / 3;
object-fit: cover;
width: 100%;
}Things that catch people out
- Pins much taller than 2:3 can be truncated in the feed, so the extra height is spent on something nobody sees.
- 2:3 and 4:5 are both portrait and crop differently. A template built for one leaves letterboxing in the other.
- Text on a pin is read at column width, which is a fraction of 1000 pixels. Set it larger than feels right at full size.
