In detail
A Story fills the screen edge to edge, which is what makes it feel different from a feed post and also what makes it easy to get wrong. There is no margin built into the presentation, so any margin has to be built into your artwork, and a design that runs to the edge of the canvas will run under the interface rather than beside it.
The top of the frame carries the profile chip and the progress bars, and the bottom carries the reply field and the share controls. A safe rule while designing is to treat roughly the top eighth and the bottom eighth as unusable for anything that must be read, then test on the narrowest and tallest phone in your audience rather than trusting the guide.
Phones are not all 9:16. A taller display shows the frame with the long edges filled and the top and bottom cropped, or fitted with bars, depending on the platform's current behaviour. Designing the important content into the middle two thirds is what makes a Story survive that variation.
The social post generator composes at exactly 1080 by 1920, and the cropper offers a 9:16 ratio if you are starting from a landscape source. It also meters caption length against platform limits, which is a separate constraint from the canvas but tends to bite at the same moment.
Examples
.story {
aspect-ratio: 9 / 16;
padding-block: 12.5%;
padding-inline: 6%;
display: grid;
place-content: center;
}One eighth top and bottom is a working starting point, not a published safe area.
Story / Reel: 1080 x 1920 -> 9:16
Portrait post: 1080 x 1350 -> 4:5
Square post: 1080 x 1080 -> 1:1
// all three share the 1080 pixel widthThings that catch people out
- Full bleed artwork with text near the edges will be covered by the interface. Reserve the top and bottom before you start designing, not after.
- The same pixel frame serves Stories, Shorts and TikTok, but each platform's controls sit in different places. One export, three checks.
- Platform safe areas are guidance and they move. Rechecking once a year is cheaper than rebuilding a template after a redesign.
